This ammonite comes from Rougemont, France, and is Callovian in age. The Callovian is the final stage of the Middle Jurassic, dating to approximately 166 to 164 million years ago. During this time, much of western Europe was covered by warm, shallow to moderately deep epicontinental seas. These seas created ideal conditions for a wide range of marine animals, including ammonites, belemnites, nautiloids, bivalves, brachiopods, gastropods, echinoids, crinoids, corals, fish, and marine reptiles.

France is especially well known for its Jurassic fossil deposits, with many regions preserving highly collectable ammonite faunas. Callovian ammonites are important in palaeontology because they are often used for biostratigraphy, helping geologists divide and correlate rock layers by age. A fossil from this interval therefore has both display appeal and scientific interest, representing a well-defined moment in Jurassic marine history.

Fossil Type and Species

Proplanulites sp. is an ammonite, an extinct marine cephalopod related to modern squid, cuttlefish, octopus, and nautilus. Ammonites had chambered shells divided internally by walls called septa. The living animal occupied the final outer chamber, while the earlier chambers helped control buoyancy as the animal moved through the water column.

Proplanulites belongs to the ammonite order Ammonitida and is associated with the superfamily Perisphinctoidea, a major Jurassic ammonite group. Members of this wider group are often recognised for their coiled shells, ribbed ornamentation, and importance in Middle and Upper Jurassic stratigraphy.
