Description
This listing features a RARE fossil ammonite specimen of Prorsisphinctes meseres from the Lower Bajocian Stage of the Middle Jurassic, sourced from Calvados, Normandy, France. This fossil represents a distinctive and important taxon from the early development of the family Perisphinctidae.
As with all our fossils, this is a 100% genuine specimen, carefully selected for its quality and authenticity. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is included. The exact fossil shown in the photographs is the one you will receive. Please refer to the scale image (1cm squares or cubes) for full sizing.
Fossil Overview:
- Species: Prorsisphinctes meseres
- Common Name: Fossil Ammonite
- Geological Period: Jurassic
- Stage: Lower Bajocian (~170–168 million years ago)
- Formation: Likely from the lower part of the Bajocian clay or marl sequences
- Location: Calvados, Normandy, France
- Preservation: Internal mould with fine ribbing detail
Geological & Depositional Environment:
During the Lower Bajocian, this region of Normandy was submerged beneath a shallow epicontinental sea within the Paris Basin. The environment supported a rich marine ecosystem with thriving ammonite populations. These marine sediments are known for their excellent preservation of ammonoids in marl and limestone facies.
The ammonites from this stage mark a transition in faunal turnover after the Aalenian, reflecting evolutionary radiation events within the Perisphinctoidea.
Stratigraphy & Taxonomy:
- Phylum: Mollusca
- Class: Cephalopoda
- Subclass: Ammonoidea
- Order: Ammonitida
- Superfamily: Perisphinctoidea
- Family: Perisphinctidae
- Genus: Prorsisphinctes
- Species: meseres
- Biozone: Early Bajocian zones, potentially within the Hyperlioceras discites or Laeviuscula zones
This species was formally described based on Bajocian specimens from western Europe, contributing to the identification of stratigraphic horizons in Jurassic basins.
Morphological Features:
- Moderately evolute coiling with visible inner whorls
- Prominent and regular bifurcating ribbing along the flanks
- A distinct keel on the venter
- Suture lines are complex but often only visible in cross section
These features point to a nektonic, fast-swimming lifestyle, with the animal likely an active predator in Jurassic seas.
Notable Points:
- Represents an early lineage within the Perisphinctidae
- Important for Jurassic biostratigraphy in western Europe
- Beautiful ribbed morphology and excellent preservation
- Sourced from a classic locality for Bajocian ammonites
