Pseudogrammoceras striatulum Ammonite Fossil | Aalenian, Jurassic | Isle of Skye Scotland UK | Alice Purnell Collection

£60.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Pseudogrammoceras striatulum, an elegant and scientifically significant ammonite species from the Aalenian Stage of the Middle Jurassic Period. Collected from the rugged and fossil-rich Isle of Skye, Scotland, United Kingdom, this rare specimen is part of the respected Alice Purnell Collection, curated for its academic and collector value.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Pseudogrammoceras striatulum is part of the Graphoceratidae family, characterised by its thin, discoidal shape, tight coiling, and finely striated shell ornamentation. It is a classic ammonite used in stratigraphic correlation across Europe, particularly marking key intervals in the Aalenian (~174–170 million years ago).

This specimen was discovered in the marine sedimentary rocks of the Hebrides Basin, deposited during a time when the area was submerged beneath a shallow Jurassic sea. These beds — part of the Great Estuarine Group and equivalent to other Lower-Middle Jurassic formations across the UK — often yield well-preserved cephalopods, including ammonites, belemnites, and bivalves.

The Isle of Skye is a globally recognised geological site, renowned for exposing continuous Jurassic sequences and for yielding high-quality ammonites in hard shales, mudstones, and limestone nodules. Specimens from this region often show beautiful detail and preservation, as seen in this Pseudogrammoceras fossil.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
