Pseudosonneratia iridescent fossil ammonite with mother of pearl shell – lower albian, cretaceous – madagascar – certified authentic fossil

£36.00

This listing offers a magnificent Pseudosonneratia fossil ammonite featuring breathtaking natural iridescence preserved from its original mother of pearl shell layer. This fossil dates to the Lower Albian stage of the Early Cretaceous Period, approximately 113 to 100 million years ago, and comes from Madagascar, renowned for its beautifully preserved fossil ammonites.

Pseudosonneratia is a genus of extinct ammonites known for their robust shells and well-developed suture lines. These fast-swimming marine cephalopods lived in the warm Cretaceous seas, preying on small fish and other marine creatures. Their shells, composed largely of aragonite, sometimes preserved a stunning nacreous (mother-of-pearl) layer, which creates the vivid, iridescent rainbow colours seen in this specimen.

The photo shows the exact specimen you will receive, complete with a scale cube (1cm) for sizing reference. Every fossil we offer comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, verifying that it is a 100% genuine natural specimen.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
