Original price was: £36.00.Current price is: £30.60.

This listing features an authentic and scientifically significant specimen of the genus Psiloceras, one of the earliest known ammonites of the Jurassic period. This particular specimen was collected from Lower Hettangian strata in Morocco, a region well known for yielding beautifully preserved Jurassic fossils.

All of our fossils are 100% genuine specimens and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The fossil you see in the photos is the exact item you will receive. A scale cube is included in the photo, with each square equalling 1cm – full sizing available by reference to the image.

Geological and Taxonomic Information:

  • Genus: Psiloceras
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Stage: Lower Hettangian (approx. 201.3 to 199.3 million years ago)
  • Likely Biozone: Planorbis Zone (if conforming to standard ammonite succession)
  • Depositional Environment: Marine shelf or basin, likely low-energy conditions with fine sedimentation promoting preservation
  • Location Found: Morocco (exact locality undetermined)

Taxonomic Classification:

  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Psiloceratoidea
  • Family: Psiloceratidae

Morphological Features:

  • Smooth, involute shell structure with a narrow umbilicus
  • Flat to slightly discoidal coiling pattern
  • Lacks ornamentation, such as ribs or tubercles — a key identifier for Psiloceras
  • Simple suture lines compared to later ammonite forms
  • Early Jurassic marker with primitive morphological traits following the Triassic extinction event

Scientific Significance:

Psiloceras species are globally recognised as some of the first true Jurassic ammonites, emerging soon after the end-Triassic mass extinction. Their appearance marks the beginning of the Jurassic period, making them critical biostratigraphic indicators.

Although better known from European locations such as the UK and Germany, Psiloceras is also found in North Africa, including Morocco. Fossils from this region help illustrate the widespread geographic recovery and radiation of ammonites after the extinction event.

Specimen Notes:

  • This is a professionally selected piece, chosen for completeness and preservation
  • Excellent example of early Jurassic cephalopod morphology
  • Scale cube/squares in image = 1cm for size reference
  • Perfect for collectors, educators, or display

Authenticity & Guarantee:

You will receive a 100% genuine fossil, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Our fossils are legally and ethically sourced and represent high-quality natural history specimens suitable for both private collections and institutional display.

Ideal For:

  • Fossil collectors
  • Geology and paleontology educators
  • Natural history displays
  • Unique science-themed gifts

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
