Psiloceras johnstoni Ammonite Fossil | Toarcian, Jurassic | South Yorkshire UK | Alice Purnell Collection | Genuine with Certificate

£36.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Psiloceras johnstoni, an early Jurassic ammonite species of high scientific interest. This well-preserved fossil was discovered in South Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and comes from the esteemed Alice Purnell Collection, recognised for high-quality, well-documented British fossil specimens.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Psiloceras is one of the most important ammonite genera in biostratigraphy. While the genus is best known from the Hettangian stage (marking the start of the Jurassic), Psiloceras johnstoni is known to persist into younger intervals and represents early Toarcian evolutionary lineages.

This specimen was recovered from Toarcian-aged deposits, dating to approximately 183–180 million years ago, a time when marine environments across Britain were undergoing major changes. The sedimentary rocks of this age in South Yorkshire are part of the extensive Lower Jurassic sequence, typically made up of silts, shales, and mudstones deposited in shallow epicontinental seas.

Fossils from these layers are known for their exceptional preservation, especially ammonites, which are often found in nodules or fine-grained mudstones that retain ribbing, coiling, and even suture lines.
