Discovered and Prepared by Our Own Team

Your Psiloceras planorbis ammonite slab was discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, on 01 May 2025. It has been cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison, giving the fossil a clear collecting history and trusted provenance. This makes it especially appealing for buyers looking for an authentic British fossil with known discovery details rather than a replica or cast.

As with all natural fossils, the specimen may show matrix, mineral staining, surface texture, natural wear, small imperfections, prepared areas, repaired or treated sections, or variations in preservation. These features are part of the fossil’s genuine geological history and help make each ammonite slab unique.

About Psiloceras planorbis

Psiloceras planorbis is one of the most important ammonites in British Jurassic palaeontology. It is widely recognised as a key fossil from the very earliest Jurassic and is closely associated with the base of the Hettangian stage. Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods related to modern squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus, living in ancient seas and using their chambered shells for buoyancy control.

Psiloceras planorbis is valued not only for its attractive fossil form but also for its major scientific significance. The species is associated with the Planorbis Zone, one of the earliest ammonite biozones of the Jurassic Period. This makes it a particularly interesting fossil for collectors who appreciate both display quality and geological importance.

The shell of Psiloceras is typically smooth or only very weakly ornamented compared with many later Jurassic ammonites. Its elegant, rounded whorls and simple planispiral coil give it a clean, classic appearance. This relatively plain morphology is one of the notable traits of the genus and reflects an early stage in the rapid ammonite diversification that followed the end-Triassic extinction event.

Blue Lias Geology, Watchet, Somerset

This specimen comes from the Blue Lias at Watchet in Somerset, a classic British Jurassic fossil locality. The Blue Lias is famous for its alternating layers of limestone and shale, deposited in ancient marine conditions during the latest Triassic and earliest Jurassic. These sediments preserve an exceptional record of prehistoric sea life, including ammonites, bivalves, fish, marine reptiles, and other fossils.

Watchet is one of Somerset’s most famous fossil locations, with coastal exposures that reveal the layered Blue Lias sequence. During the early Jurassic, this area was covered by a shallow sea where fine muds and carbonate-rich sediments accumulated on the seabed. Over millions of years, these sediments hardened into the fossil-bearing rocks seen today.

Collectable British Jurassic Fossil Display Piece

This Psiloceras planorbis ammonite slab is a desirable specimen for collectors searching for genuine ammonite fossils, Jurassic ammonites, Blue Lias fossils, Watchet fossils, Somerset fossils, UK fossils, fossil slabs, and scientifically important British natural history specimens. Its slab format makes it especially suitable for display in a fossil cabinet, study, classroom, shop display, geology collection, or museum-style arrangement.

With its genuine Jurassic age, Blue Lias origin, Watchet Somerset provenance, discovery by Alister and Alison, preparation by Alison, and Certificate of Authenticity, this Psiloceras planorbis fossil ammonite slab is a distinctive piece from the ancient seas that once covered Britain.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
