Discovery, Preparation & Provenance

This ammonite was personally discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, on 29 December 2025 along the historic Jurassic Coast exposures of Somerset. Following recovery, the specimen was professionally cleaned, prepared, and stabilised by Alison, ensuring the fossil’s natural features are clearly revealed while preserving its integrity. Direct provenance from discovery to preparation adds significant value and collectability.

Geological Formation & Age

  • Formation: Blue Lias Formation
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Stage: Hettangian
  • Biozone: Planorbis Zone

The Blue Lias is internationally recognised for marking the earliest Jurassic seas, deposited around 201 million years ago. These sediments formed in a shallow, warm marine environment rich in life shortly after the Triassic–Jurassic extinction event, making fossils from this horizon scientifically important.

Fossil Type & Species Details

  • Fossil Type: Ammonite (extinct marine cephalopod)
  • Species: Psiloceras planorbis
  • Family: Psiloceratidae
  • Superfamily: Psiloceratoidea
  • Order: Ammonitida

Psiloceras planorbis is one of the most historically significant ammonite species, internationally used as an index fossil to define the base of the Jurassic Period. Its presence allows geologists to precisely correlate rock layers across Europe and beyond.

Morphology & Notable Features

This specimen displays the classic characteristics of Psiloceras planorbis, including a smooth, flattened, planispirally coiled shell with a relatively open umbilicus. The lack of heavy ribbing and the clean, elegant whorls give this ammonite a refined appearance that appeals to both collectors and educators. These early ammonites represent an important evolutionary stage following mass extinction, making them especially desirable.

Display & Collectability

Supplied with a stand, this fossil is ideal for display in a private collection, educational setting, or natural history décor. Full sizing can be seen clearly in the photographs provided. The combination of scientific importance, clear morphology, documented discovery, and professional preparation makes this an excellent collector-grade specimen.

Ideal For

  • Fossil and ammonite collectors
  • Jurassic and Blue Lias enthusiasts
  • Educational and teaching collections
  • Museum-style or home display
  • Unique and meaningful geological gifts

This Psiloceras planorbis fossil ammonite from Watchet, Somerset is a timeless relic from the dawn of the Jurassic seas, offering both scientific significance and natural beauty in one authentic specimen.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
