Psiloceras plicatulum Ammonite Fossil | Lower Hettangian, Jurassic | Bebenhausen Germany | Alice Purnell Collection | Genuine with Certificate

£60.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Psiloceras plicatulum, an extinct species of early Jurassic ammonite. Notably part of the Alice Purnell Collection, this specimen holds not only paleontological value but also a traceable provenance, making it a desirable piece for both collectors and academic interest.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Psiloceras is one of the earliest known genera of ammonites, often used as a biostratigraphic marker to define the very beginning of the Jurassic Period. Psiloceras plicatulum is recognised for its gently ribbed or plicate shell and relatively smooth whorls compared to later ammonites.

This specimen was collected from the Lower Hettangian stage of the Early Jurassic, approximately 201.3 to 199 million years ago, in Bebenhausen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany—a classic fossil locality known for its well-preserved marine Jurassic fauna.

The ammonite would have lived in shallow marine environments after the end-Triassic extinction, one of the major recovery periods in marine life evolution. As a fast-moving nektonic predator, Psiloceras played an essential role in the rebounding Jurassic ecosystems.
