PSILOCERAS plicatulum Fossil Ammonite – Lower Hettangian Stage, Early Jurassic, Bebenhausen, Germany

This rare and historically significant ammonite fossil belongs to Psiloceras plicatulum, one of the earliest and most iconic ammonite species to appear after the end-Triassic extinction. Found in the renowned fossil beds near Bebenhausen, Germany, this specimen dates to the Lower Hettangian stage of the Early Jurassic, approximately 201 to 199 million years ago.

Fossil Type & Species:

  • Type: Invertebrate Fossil (Ammonite Shell)
  • Species: Psiloceras plicatulum
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Suborder: Psiloceratina
  • Superfamily: Psiloceratoidea
  • Family: Psiloceratidae
  • Described by: Quenstedt, 1883

Geological & Stratigraphic Details:

  • Origin: Bebenhausen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
  • Formation: Lias Group (specifically Lower Lias deposits)
  • Geological Stage: Hettangian (Lower Jurassic)
  • Age: ~201.3–199.3 million years ago
  • Biozone: Psiloceras planorbis Zone — often used as the biostratigraphic marker for the start of the Jurassic Period
  • Depositional Environment: Marine shale and mudstone with fine sedimentation, excellent for fossil preservation in anoxic, low-energy sea floor settings

Morphology & Features: This Psiloceras plicatulum specimen shows classic early ammonite features:

  • Planispiral coiling with moderately involute whorls
  • Relatively smooth flanks with fine, closely spaced ribbing (plicae)
  • Rounded venter and subtle suture lines
  • Low-profile and compressed geometry, typical of early Jurassic ammonites
  • Preservation in dark grey to brown tones, often contrasting beautifully against the matrix

Notable: Psiloceras is a genus of prime palaeontological importance, as its appearance marks the official boundary between the Triassic and Jurassic periods. Psiloceras plicatulum is one of the earliest ammonite species to emerge following the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event and is often used in global stratigraphy.

Specimen Details:

  • Origin: Bebenhausen, Germany
  • Species: Psiloceras plicatulum
  • Fossil Type: Ammonite Shell (Invertebrate)

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
