Description
Ptychophylloceras sp. Fossil Ammonite – Callovian, Jurassic – Tulear, Madagascar
About the Fossil:
This beautifully preserved Ptychophylloceras sp. ammonite fossil originates from the Callovian stage of the Middle Jurassic (~166-163 million years ago) and was discovered in Tulear, Madagascar. Ptychophylloceras is a genus of phylloceratid ammonites, known for their smooth, involute shells with complex suture patterns and highly distinctive morphology, making them an intriguing species in the ammonite fossil record.
During the Middle Jurassic, ammonites like Ptychophylloceras sp. inhabited warm marine environments, where they played an essential role in ancient marine ecosystems. Unlike other ammonites, phylloceratids such as Ptychophylloceras are believed to have been deep-water species, with their streamlined shell structure suggesting enhanced swimming capabilities. The Callovian deposits of Tulear, Madagascar, are well-known for their ammonite-rich formations, providing valuable paleontological insights into the evolution of Jurassic cephalopods.
