Description

Genuine Putealiceras puteale Ammonite Fossil

This carefully selected fossil is a genuine Putealiceras puteale ammonite dating from the Upper Callovian division of the Middle Jurassic Period. It was collected from Lutton in the United Kingdom and represents an authentic example of the varied marine life that inhabited the region during the later part of the Callovian Stage.

The photograph shows the actual fossil specimen you will receive, allowing its preservation, natural colour, surface detail and overall appearance to be examined before purchase. Full sizing and scale information can be seen in the accompanying photograph.

Upper Callovian Middle Jurassic Fossil

The Callovian was the final stage of the Middle Jurassic, immediately preceding the Oxfordian Stage of the Upper Jurassic. During this interval, much of Britain was covered by warm to temperate shallow seas connected to a wider European marine environment. These waters supported abundant ammonites, belemnites, bivalves and other marine organisms.

After death, an ammonite shell could settle onto the seabed and become buried beneath accumulating sediment. Over an immense period of geological time, mineral-rich groundwater and the compaction of the surrounding deposits allowed the shell or its internal mould to be preserved as a fossil.

Callovian ammonites are particularly important to palaeontologists because their rapidly changing shell forms and widespread distribution allow individual rock layers to be compared and dated. Different ammonite groups appeared, evolved and disappeared over relatively restricted intervals, making them valuable index fossils for Jurassic stratigraphy.

Putealiceras Classification and Shell Form

Putealiceras is an extinct ammonite genus belonging to the family Oppeliidae within the order Ammonitida. It is also frequently treated within the broader genus Hecticoceras as Hecticoceras (Putealiceras). Members of this group are characteristic of the Callovian and are recognised by their comparatively compressed, streamlined shells and distinctive ventral ornamentation.

Typical Putealiceras ornamentation includes radial ribs that may divide around the middle of the flank before extending towards the outer edge of the whorl. The venter, or outermost part of the coiled shell, commonly bears a defined median keel. These features gave the living ammonite a hydrodynamic shell form suited to movement through the Jurassic sea. The exact strength and visibility of the ribs, keel and whorl structure naturally vary according to the individual specimen, its growth stage and the manner in which it was fossilised.

Like modern nautiluses, ammonites possessed chambered shells. The animal occupied the final and largest chamber, while the older chambers were connected by a narrow tube called the siphuncle. By regulating fluids and gases within these chambers, the ammonite could control its buoyancy in the water column.

Fossil Locality: Lutton, United Kingdom

Lutton lies within an area of eastern England where Jurassic marine rocks occur beneath or close to the surface. Fossils recovered from these deposits provide evidence of the extensive seas that once covered this part of Britain.

The fine sediment deposited in these marine environments was capable of preserving durable shells and skeletal material. Ammonites from British Callovian strata have long been studied for their importance in identifying geological zones and reconstructing connections between Jurassic marine basins across Britain and continental Europe.

This specimen offers a tangible connection to that vanished seascape and to an animal that lived more than 160 million years ago.

Authentic Fossil with Certificate of Authenticity

This is a genuine fossil specimen and not a modern replica or reproduction. It includes a generic Certificate of Authenticity card carrying our lifetime guarantee of authenticity.

Every fossil is individually selected for its natural character, scientific interest and suitability for display or collection. Small areas of matrix, natural fractures, mineralisation, weathering and variations in surface texture are normal characteristics of genuine fossils and form part of the specimen’s geological history.

Ideal Jurassic Fossil for Collectors and Display

This Putealiceras puteale ammonite would make an excellent addition to a Jurassic fossil collection, British palaeontology display, natural-history cabinet or educational geological collection. Its scientifically interesting Upper Callovian age, identifiable ammonite form and British provenance also make it a distinctive gift for a fossil enthusiast, geology student or collector of ancient marine life.

The specimen can be displayed alongside other ammonites, belemnites, minerals or geological specimens to illustrate the diversity of Britain’s prehistoric marine environments.
