Pygurus Urchin Echinoid Fossil – Jurassic Sea Urchin – Madagascar – Genuine Fossil with COA

£20.40

Echinoids, or Sea Urchins as they are better known, have been present in our seas for around 450 million years, and are still largely present today. Their name derives from the Greek ‘Echin’ (‘Spiny’), referring to their protective spines, and ‘Ooid’ (Egg-Like) in reference to their globular shell, or ‘test’ as it is known. Echinoids are part of a much larger group of animals known as the Echinoderms (‘Spiny-Skins’), which also includes the Asteroids (Starfish), Holothurians (Sea Cucumbers), Crinoids (Sea Lilies and Feather Stars) and the Ophiuroids (Brittle Stars). Sea urchins move slowly, crawling with their tube feet, and sometimes pushing themselves with their spines. They feed primarily on algae but also eat slow-moving or sessile animals. Their predators include Sea Otters, Starfish, Wolf Eels, and Triggerfish

Description

Discover a beautifully preserved Pygurus Urchin (Echinoid) fossil from the Jurassic Period, unearthed in Madagascar. This exquisite marine fossil dates back approximately 150 million years, offering a tangible link to ancient seas that once teemed with life.

Echinoids, better known today as Sea Urchins, have existed in Earth’s oceans for over 450 million years and remain present in modern marine environments. The term “Echinoid” is derived from the Greek word echinos, meaning “spiny,” and ooid, meaning “egg-like,” referencing their distinctive round, spiny shells, called a test.

Pygurus belongs to a group of regular echinoids known for their radial symmetry and beautiful geometric shell patterns. These slow-moving sea creatures crawled across ancient seafloors using tube feet and spines to feed on algae and other organic matter. Their hard calcite shells often fossilised well, giving us today these highly sought-after and scientifically significant specimens.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
