Description

This listing features a genuine Pygurus fossil sea urchin (echinoid) from the Jurassic Period, discovered in the renowned fossil-rich regions of Madagascar. Estimated to be around 201 to 145 million years old, this beautifully preserved echinoderm offers a fascinating glimpse into Earth’s ancient marine ecosystems.

Pygurus is a genus of extinct regular echinoids, part of the class Echinoidea, a group that includes modern sea urchins and sand dollars. Like its modern relatives, Pygurus possessed a round, dome-shaped shell (called a “test”) covered in spines used for movement and protection. Over millions of years, the organic materials decayed, and minerals slowly replaced them, preserving the intricate shell structure in stone.

Echinoids have existed in Earth’s oceans for over 450 million years, and the fossil record of these animals is vital for understanding changes in ancient seafloor environments. Their unique radial symmetry and calcium carbonate tests make them particularly resilient to fossilisation.

This specimen retains beautiful structural detail and displays the symmetrical pattern typical of urchins. It serves as a brilliant collector’s item or educational display, appealing to fossil enthusiasts, geology educators, and students alike.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
