Geological & Scientific Information:

  • Genus: Homeoplanulites (with associated bivalve)
  • Type: Fossil Ammonite (extinct marine cephalopod) with Bivalve
  • Size: Approximately 10.5 inches
  • Age: Approx. 166–164 million years old
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Stage: Lower Callovian
  • Location Found: Deux-Sèvres, France
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Stephanoceratoidea
  • Family: Possibly Kosmoceratidae (subject to regional taxonomic classification)
  • Morphological Features: Homeoplanulites is characterised by its relatively involute shell with moderately compressed whorls, strong ribbing, and fine ornamentation. This specimen showcases preserved suture lines and pronounced rib structures, along with an accompanying bivalve fossil that adds ecological context.
  • Depositional Environment: Calm to moderately shallow marine environments with marl and limestone sedimentation, allowing excellent preservation of shelly fauna.
  • Scientific Importance: Fossils from the Callovian of western France are essential for understanding cephalopod evolution and biostratigraphy during the Middle Jurassic. The combination of ammonite and bivalve provides rare insight into faunal interactions and paleoecology.

Additional Notes:

This dual-fossil specimen offers more than size—it offers a narrative of prehistoric marine life. Fossils displaying species interaction or co-preservation are uncommon and valuable both scientifically and aesthetically.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
