Specimen Overview:

This is a large, stunning 11-inch ammonite fossil of the rare species Metasigaloceras rusticum, dating to the Lower Turonian stage of the Late Cretaceous. It was discovered in the rich marine chalk and limestone beds of the Penly and Biville-sur-Mer area in France—an important region for mid-Cretaceous marine fossils.

This is a genuine, museum-quality specimen with excellent preservation, displaying characteristic features of the species. A 1cm scale rule cube is included in the photograph for reference—please refer to the image for full sizing and preservation condition. The photo shows the exact fossil you will receive.

Geological Context & Depositional Environment:

During the Turonian, large parts of Europe were submerged beneath a warm epicontinental sea. The Penly-Biville-sur-Mer region was part of this tropical to subtropical marine environment, where fine carbonate sediments accumulated on the seafloor, aiding the fossilisation of marine invertebrates such as ammonites. This depositional setting is known for producing exceptionally well-preserved fossil specimens, making it a key location in Cretaceous palaeontology.

Morphology & Notable Features:

Metasigaloceras rusticum is known for its large size and robust, involute shell. The specimen displays moderately compressed whorls with distinct ribbing and gently curved growth lines. The outer whorl is often smooth, making the inner ornamentation more visually prominent. Its symmetry and thickness are diagnostic features that help in the identification of this rare species.

The size (11 inches / ~28cm) is especially notable, as larger specimens of M. rusticum are highly prized among collectors and rarely offered for sale.

Authenticity & Guarantee:

All of our fossils are 100% genuine specimens and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Each fossil is hand-selected and prepared to highlight its natural beauty and scientific significance.

Perfect For:
