🦕 Fossil Overview:

This is a RARE and exceptionally well-preserved 3.75-inch Fully Rooted Globidens aegyptius (Igdamanosaurus) Mosasaur Tooth, dating back to the Late Cretaceous Period (~70 million years ago). It was discovered in the Khouribga Basin, Morocco, a site known for yielding some of the most spectacular marine reptile fossils in the world.

Globidens aegyptius, also known as Igdamanosaurus, was a specialized species of mosasaur with rounded, robust teeth adapted for crushing the shells of ammonites, bivalves, and other hard-shelled marine prey. Unlike typical mosasaurs with sharp, conical teeth designed for grasping fish, Globidens evolved powerful jaws and thick enamel-coated teeth suited for crushing and grinding. This makes their teeth an extraordinary and highly sought-after fossil find.

This fossil originates from the Alice Purnell Collection, one of the largest and most renowned fossil collections in the world. Fossils from this collection are highly collectible and hold significant paleontological value.

🪨 Geological & Scientific Details:

  • Species: Globidens aegyptius (Igdamanosaurus)
  • Group: Mosasauridae (Marine Reptiles)
  • Age: Late Cretaceous (~70 Million Years Ago)
  • Location: Khouribga Basin, Morocco
  • Tooth Features: Fully rooted with thick enamel and distinctive crushing shape
  • Preservation: Exceptional condition with clear natural fossilization patterns

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
