Specimen Overview:

This rare 4.25-inch ammonite specimen is Choffatia waageni, an elegant and scientifically important ammonite from the Callovian stage of the Jurassic. It was unearthed in the Montreuil-Bellay region of Anjou, France—a classic fossil locality known for its rich marine deposits.

The actual fossil shown in the photo is the exact specimen you will receive. A 1cm scale cube is included in the image to provide an accurate size reference. Please view the photo for complete sizing and preservation details.

Geological Context & Depositional Environment:

During the Callovian, the area of Montreuil-Bellay was part of a shallow, tropical epicontinental sea that stretched across much of Europe. Sediment accumulation in this marine environment consisted of fine calcareous mudstones and marls, which helped preserve marine life—including ammonites—in excellent condition.

The fossil layers of this region are associated with various Perisphinctid ammonite zones and subzones, offering crucial data for Jurassic stratigraphy and biostratigraphic correlation.

Morphology & Notable Features:

Choffatia waageni is noted for its evolute, discoidal shell with gently rounded whorls and prominent bifurcating ribs. These ribs radiate symmetrically from the umbilicus across the flanks and reach the venter in a continuous pattern. The fossil exhibits characteristic Perisphinctid ornamentation, making it both scientifically informative and visually striking.

The 4.25″ size, combined with its defined ribbing and excellent preservation, makes this specimen a rare and desirable addition to any fossil collection.

Authenticity & Guarantee:

All of our fossils are 100% genuine specimens and include a Certificate of Authenticity. Each fossil is carefully chosen, professionally prepared, and stabilised for long-term preservation.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
