RARE 4.5″ Baculites Fossil Ammonite – Baculites sp., Bearpaw Shale, Campanian, Cretaceous, Montana, USA – Genuine Specimen with COA

£180.00

This is a rare 4.5-inch Baculites sp. ammonite fossil from the Bearpaw Shale Formation, Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, discovered in Montana, USA. Baculites were an extinct genus of straight-shelled ammonites, closely related to modern squid and cuttlefish. Unlike coiled ammonites, Baculites evolved a long, uncoiled shell, enabling them to adapt to different marine environments.

The Bearpaw Shale is famous for preserving exceptional Late Cretaceous marine fossils, including ammonites, mosasaurs, and marine reptiles. This Baculites specimen is well-preserved with visible suture patterns and is an excellent example of this unique cephalopod group.

Geological Information:

  • Formation: Bearpaw Shale Formation
  • Stage: Campanian (~80-72 million years old)

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
