  • Age: Late Cretaceous, Lower Turonian Stage (~93.9 to 89.8 million years ago)
  • Locality: Cichahia, Mexico
  • Formation: Likely part of the marine sequences of the Guerrero-Morelos Basin
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine carbonate platform or basin margin deposits
  • Geological Stage: Lower Turonian
  • Biozone: May correspond to the Watinoceras devonense or Mammites nodosoides biozones

Taxonomic Classification:

  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Acanthoceratoidea
  • Family: Coilopoceratidae
  • Genus: Coilopoceras
  • Species: Coilopoceras coiletti
  • Described By: Marcou, 1858

Morphology & Notable Features:

  • Involute to moderately involute shell with slightly compressed whorls
  • Ribbing strong and flexuous, extending across the flanks
  • Venter tends to be rounded or slightly keeled
  • Umbilicus small and deeply incised
  • Sutural patterns moderately complex, typical of mid-Cretaceous ammonites

Scientific & Collector Significance:

Coilopoceras coiletti is a key index fossil for the Lower Turonian stage of the Late Cretaceous and plays a critical role in global biostratigraphy. Its presence in Mexico reflects widespread marine transgressions and a thriving cephalopod fauna during the early part of the Turonian.

This well-preserved example from Cichahia makes for a rare and informative addition to any fossil collection, especially given the rarity of high-quality Coilopoceratidae specimens from this region.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
