Description
An impressive and scientifically significant Hildoceras bifrons ammonite fossil from the Beacon Limestone Formation (Jurassic), uncovered at Ilminster, Somerset, UK — a classic locality renowned for richly fossiliferous Lower Jurassic strata.
This 4.5″ A-grade ammonite specimen was discovered on 06 October 2024 by our expert field team, Alister and Alison, and was carefully cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison to showcase its detailed ribbing and coiling.
Hildoceras bifrons is known for its evolute, compressed shell and strong, bifurcating ribs, making it a striking representative of the family Hildoceratidae, within the superfamily Hildoceratoidea. It is an index fossil of the Bifrons Biozone in the Toarcian Stage of the Early Jurassic.
The fossil originates from the Beacon Limestone Formation, deposited in an open marine environment, where ammonites like Hildoceras flourished in dynamic, nutrient-rich waters.
