Unearth a rare and fascinating example of Cretaceous marine life with this 4″ Fagesia thorni fossil ammonite, discovered in the fossil-rich Lower Turonian deposits of Gombe, Nigeria. Belonging to the family Acanthoceratidae, Fagesia was a genus of heteromorph ammonites—marine molluscs that lived in the warm shallow seas during the mid-Cretaceous.

Fagesia thorni is a lesser-seen species in the fossil market and is especially prized for its chunky, coarsely ribbed shell and distinctive morphology. This fossil showcases well-preserved suture patterns and natural coloration, making it a scientifically and visually captivating piece for both collectors and enthusiasts of African palaeontology.

These cephalopods were part of a dynamic marine ecosystem, co-existing with other ammonites, early sharks, marine reptiles, and bony fish. Their extinction came near the end of the Cretaceous, alongside the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.

This particular specimen has been carefully selected, professionally cleaned, and is presented exactly as shown in the photograph. It’s a 100% genuine fossil, ethically sourced, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity to guarantee its origin and age.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
