Specimen Overview:
This beautifully preserved 5.25-inch ammonite fossil belongs to the rare species Macrocephaites lietzinguensis, originating from the Lower Callovian stage of the Middle Jurassic. It was discovered in the fossil-rich marine layers of Haute-Marne, France—a classic region known for its ammonite-bearing strata.
The photograph shows the exact fossil you will receive. A 1cm scale rule cube is included for reference. Please see the photo for full size, detail, and preservation quality.
Geological Context & Depositional Environment:
During the Lower Callovian, the region that is now Haute-Marne was part of a shallow, subtropical seaway teeming with marine life. Fine calcareous muds and marls accumulated on the sea floor, creating ideal conditions for fossilisation.
This specimen may be associated with the Macrocephalites gracilis biozone—a key ammonite zone used in correlating Middle Jurassic marine sequences across Europe. The geological context is important for scientific study and offers great insight into the palaeobiogeography of the time.
Morphology & Notable Features:
Macrocephaites lietzinguensis is characterised by its moderately involute shell, rounded whorl section, and well-marked, gently curved ribbing. The ribs are generally dense and fine, giving it a ribbed but streamlined appearance, and may exhibit subtle tubercles along the flanks in better-preserved examples.
This 5.25″ specimen is a fine example of the species, combining size, symmetry, and surface preservation, making it a prized addition to any serious fossil collection.

All of our fossils are 100% genuine and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Each specimen is carefully selected, professionally cleaned, and accurately identified.
