RARE 5.5″ Cunningtoniceras inerm Fossil Chalk Ammonite – Middle Cenomanian, Cretaceous – France – Alice Purnell Collection

£42.00

Featured here is a rare and scientifically valuable fossil ammonite of the species Cunningtoniceras inerm from the Middle Cenomanian Stage of the Late Cretaceous period, dating to approximately 98–95 million years ago. This beautifully preserved specimen, measuring approximately 5.5 inches, was discovered in France and comes from the reputable Alice Purnell Collection, known for its high-quality and well-documented fossil specimens.

Cunningtoniceras inerm is a species of ammonite belonging to the family Acanthoceratidae, characterised by its generally smooth and compressed shell with faint or absent tubercles. Its relatively simple yet elegant morphology makes it distinct among more heavily ornamented contemporaries. These cephalopods lived in warm, shallow marine environments, where they thrived as active swimmers and predators in Cretaceous seas.

The fossil is preserved in the fine white chalk matrix typical of Cenomanian marine deposits, with well-defined coiling and sutures visible across the specimen. It serves both as a striking display item and an important scientific piece.

Geological Context: The Cenomanian Stage is the first stage of the Late Cretaceous period and is marked by high global sea levels and extensive chalk deposition in Europe. France, especially regions with access to fossiliferous chalk formations, is well-known for yielding well-preserved marine invertebrates such as ammonites. Fossils like Cunningtoniceras inerm are valuable for their stratigraphic importance and paleoecological insight.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
