RARE 6.25″ Alsatites farinipopuli Fossil Ammonite – Bajocian Jurassic – Sandford Lane Quarry Sherborne UK – COA – Alice Purnell Collection

£60.00

A stunning and rare 6.25-inch fossil ammonite of the species Alsatites farinipopuli, from the Bajocian Stage of the Middle Jurassic, collected from the well-known Sandford Lane Quarry, Sherborne, Dorset, United Kingdom. This carefully selected piece comes directly from the highly respected Alice Purnell Collection. The photo in this listing shows the actual specimen you will receive.

As with all our fossils, this piece is 100% genuine and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Geological Context:

  • Species: Alsatites farinipopuli
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Stage: Middle Jurassic – Bajocian (~170.3 to 168.3 million years ago)
  • Formation: Inferior Oolite Group (Sherborne Limestone Formation)
  • Location: Sandford Lane Quarry, Sherborne, Dorset, UK
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine carbonate platform, deposited under warm subtropical epicontinental sea conditions

Taxonomic Classification:

  • Family: Dactylioceratidae
  • Superfamily: Hildoceratoidea
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Suborder: Ammonitina
  • Genus: Alsatites
  • Species: A. farinipopuli
  • Formal Identification: Often associated with classic Inferior Oolite faunal studies from Dorset, known from detailed taxonomic work on mid-Jurassic ammonites of southern England.

Morphological Features:

Alsatites farinipopuli is known for its wide, involute discoidal shell with fine but sharply defined ribbing and a smooth outer whorl. It has a relatively deep umbilicus and may exhibit weak tuberculation depending on growth stage. This particular specimen shows excellent three-dimensional preservation with subtle ribbing and suture lines visible.

The ammonite’s size and completeness make it a notable collector’s piece, especially due to the scarcity of this species in such fine condition from this locality.

Stratigraphic Significance:

This ammonite is significant within Bajocian biostratigraphy, often found within the Laeviuscula or Humphriesianum Zones of the Middle Jurassic, helping to refine ammonite biozones for southern England. Its occurrence in the Sherborne Limestone places it firmly in a high-palaeontological value interval of the Inferior Oolite sequence.

Additional Information:

  • All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
  • Scale Rule Squares / Cube = 1cm. Please see the photo for full sizing.
  • This is a carefully chosen fossil from the Alice Purnell Collection.
  • The specimen shown is exactly the one you will receive.

This museum-quality specimen is ideal for fossil enthusiasts, collectors, researchers, and educational display. Its rarity, size, and preservation quality make it a standout piece in any ammonite or Jurassic fossil collection.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
