Description
This is a rare and well-preserved 6.5-inch Cylindroteuthis puzosiana belemnite fossil from the Oxford Clay Formation, Oxfordian stage of the Jurassic period, discovered in Peterborough, United Kingdom. Belemnites were extinct marine cephalopods related to modern squid and cuttlefish. Unlike ammonites, they possessed an internal shell known as the guard, which fossilised over millions of years and is commonly found in Jurassic marine deposits.
This specimen showcases exceptional preservation, with its characteristic elongated, bullet-shaped guard intact and well-defined surface details. Belemnites played a crucial role in Jurassic marine ecosystems, serving as an essential food source for marine reptiles and larger predatory fish.
