This listing presents a RARE 6″ fossil ammonite, Mantelliceras mantelii, from the Lower Cenomanian Stage of the Cretaceous Period, discovered in the fossil-rich coastal deposits of Analava, Madagascar. This impressive fossil reflects the remarkable biodiversity of mid-Cretaceous marine life and is a superbly preserved example of a classic heteromorph ammonite genus.
Geological & Palaeontological Details:
Species: Mantelliceras mantelii
Geological Period: Cretaceous
Geological Stage: Lower Cenomanian (~100.5 to 98 million years ago)
Locality: Analava, Madagascar
Depositional Environment: Marine platform with carbonate-rich sediments, part of the extensive tropical Tethyan margin
Order: Ammonitida
Superfamily: Acanthoceratoidea
Family: Acanthoceratidae
Genus: Mantelliceras
Biozone: Often associated with Mantelliceras mantelli and Calycoceras guerangeri zones
Formally Described by: Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1801)
Morphological Features:
Strongly ribbed evolute shell with moderate whorl expansion
Defined tubercles along the flanks and venter
Robust suture patterns visible on some whorls
Preserved in warm mineral tones with occasional calcite veining
Notable Aspects:
A species widely used in biostratigraphy to correlate Lower Cenomanian strata globally
Displays transitional morphology between earlier Albian and later Turonian forms
Ideal for scientific study, display, or serious fossil collectors
Authenticity & Presentation:
100% genuine fossil specimen
Includes a Certificate of Authenticity
Actual specimen photographed – what you see is what you get
Scale cube = 1cm shown in photo for precise sizing
This Mantelliceras mantelii fossil represents a fascinating snapshot of life from the early Late Cretaceous oceans and is a beautiful, scientifically important ammonite from Madagascar’s renowned fossil beds.
All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Cretaceous Information
The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
