This impressive 7-inch ammonite fossil belongs to the genus Euaspidoceras, a striking and highly collectable ammonite from the Callovian stage of the Middle Jurassic. It was discovered in the famous fossil-rich marine sediments of Maintirano, Madagascar, which are celebrated for their exceptional preservation and abundance of large, decorative ammonites.

The exact specimen in the photo is the one you will receive. A 1cm scale cube is included in the image to provide accurate sizing. Please see the photo for detailed measurements and preservation quality.

Geological Context & Depositional Environment:

During the Callovian, Madagascar lay along the margins of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana and was submerged beneath a warm, tropical sea. These shallow marine conditions allowed for the accumulation of fine-grained sediments, rich in calcium carbonate, which facilitated the fossilisation of marine life.

Fossils from the Callovian beds in the Maintirano region are typically found within limestone and marl deposits and include a wide range of well-preserved cephalopods, including perisphinctid and aspidoceratid ammonites.

Morphology & Notable Features:

Euaspidoceras is noted for its thick, robust shell with wide whorls, strong ribbing, and characteristic tubercles (knob-like projections) along the flanks and outer shell. These ornamented features give the ammonite a bold, sculptural appearance, distinguishing it from other Callovian genera.

This 7″ specimen displays classic Euaspidoceras morphology—broad flanks, a deep umbilicus, and prominent ribs terminating in strong tubercles—making it an excellent representative of the genus and a standout display fossil.

Authenticity & Guarantee:

All of our fossils are 100% genuine and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. This specimen has been carefully selected, professionally cleaned, and prepared to museum display standards.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
