Rare Coroniceras rotiforme Fossil Ammonite

This is a rare and impressive Coroniceras rotiforme fossil ammonite from the Bucklandi Zone of the Lower Sinemurian stage, Early Jurassic, collected from Keynsham, near Bristol, Somerset, United Kingdom. Measuring approximately 7 inches, with full sizing shown in the photograph, this is a substantial British Jurassic ammonite with excellent collector appeal and strong display presence.

Geology and Jurassic Age

This ammonite dates from the Lower Sinemurian stage of the Early Jurassic, approximately 199 to 194 million years old. The specimen is from the Bucklandi Zone, an important ammonite biozone used by geologists and palaeontologists to date Lower Jurassic marine rocks. The Bucklandi Zone is named after the ammonite Coroniceras bucklandi and is one of the classic early Sinemurian fossil zones recognised in British Jurassic stratigraphy.

During the Lower Sinemurian, the Keynsham and Bristol area was covered by warm shallow marine seas. Sediments accumulated across the seabed, preserving the remains of ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, belemnites, crinoids and other marine organisms. These fossil-bearing deposits form part of Britain’s rich Jurassic geological heritage and provide evidence of a very different prehistoric landscape beneath ancient seas.

Fossil Type and Species

This fossil is an ammonite, an extinct marine cephalopod related to modern squid, cuttlefish and nautilus. Ammonites lived in coiled, chambered shells and were active marine animals. The living creature occupied the final body chamber, while the internal chambers helped regulate buoyancy as it moved through the water column.
