Description
Presenting a stunning and rare 8.5″ Acanthoceras rhotomagense fossil ammonite, unearthed from the Lower Cenomanian strata of the Cretaceous Period, collected at Lake, west of Sandown, on the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom.
This large and visually striking ammonite belongs to the species Acanthoceras rhotomagense, an extinct cephalopod known for its ornate, tuberculate shell. The genus Acanthoceras is part of the:
- Order: Ammonitida
- Superfamily: Acanthoceratoidea
- Family: Acanthoceratidae
Morphological Features:
- Prominent ribbing and tubercles along the flanks and venter
- Slightly evolute coiling with exposed inner whorls
- Complex suture lines (where visible) indicating its advanced evolutionary placement among Cretaceous ammonites
- Distinct ornamentation with spiny nodes, typical of Acanthoceras rhotomagense
Geological Context:
- Stage: Lower Cenomanian (earliest part of the Late Cretaceous)
- Age: Approximately 100.5 to 96 million years ago
- Formation/Locality: Found at Lake, near Sandown, Isle of Wight
- Depositional Environment: Likely a shallow marine shelf, part of the European epicontinental sea during the Cretaceous, favoring the preservation of large nektonic ammonites
- Biozone: Associated with the Mantelliceras mantelli and Acanthoceras rhotomagense zones in global Cenomanian biostratigraphy
Notable Information:
- First described formally by d’Orbigny in 1841, Acanthoceras rhotomagense is a benchmark species in Cenomanian ammonite zonation.
- Fossils of this type are used for chronostratigraphic correlation across Europe due to their rapid evolution and broad geographic range.
The specimen is photographed with a 1cm scale cube to provide an accurate size reference. The actual fossil pictured is the one you will receive, carefully selected for quality and scientific interest.
Authenticity Guaranteed: Every fossil we sell is a 100% genuine natural specimen, and each comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. This Acanthoceras ammonite is a museum-quality piece suitable for collectors, educators, and display collections.
Don’t miss the chance to own a spectacular fossil ammonite from one of the most geologically significant Cretaceous deposits in the UK.
