Originating from Madagascar, a region renowned for exceptional fossil preservation, this specimen offers both scientific value and a stunning display quality.

The specimen in the photo is the exact one you will receive. A 1cm scale rule cube is included for sizing reference. Please consult the image for full details on size and preservation.

Geological Context & Depositional Environment:

During the Middle Jurassic, Madagascar was part of the southern supercontinent Gondwana and was covered by warm, shallow seas that promoted rich marine life and excellent conditions for fossilisation. Sediments during the Bathonian period were typically fine-grained limestones and marls, which allowed for delicate and complete preservation of ammonites.

While exact zonation can vary, the Bathonian strata in Madagascar are known to yield a diverse ammonite fauna, reflecting the evolution and radiation of early Perisphinctoid forms.

Morphology & Notable Features:

Proceratites schloenbachi is characterised by its moderately evolute shell, open coiling, and prominent ribbing that often bifurcates or trifurcates along the flanks. Its ornamentation is bold, with strong radial ribs that give it a sculptural appearance and aid in identification.

This 8″ specimen is an excellent example, showcasing defined ribbing, a rounded whorl section, and excellent surface preservation—making it an outstanding addition to any fossil collection.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
