Description
Presenting a rare and scientifically significant 8″ Skirroceras leptogyrale fossil ammonite, discovered in the Lower Bajocian Stage of the Middle Jurassic, near Bruton, Somerset, United Kingdom. This is an excellent example of a lesser-known but taxonomically important ammonite genus.
Taxonomic Classification:
- Genus: Skirroceras
- Species: leptogyrale
- Order: Ammonitida
- Superfamily: Stephanoceratoidea
- Family: Stephanoceratidae
- First formally described by Buckman (1921), this genus is considered an important transitional form in Middle Jurassic ammonite evolution.
Geological Context:
- Formation: Inferior Oolite Group (Bajocian limestones and marls in the Wessex Basin)
- Stage: Lower Bajocian (Middle Jurassic)
- Age: Approximately 170 million years old
- Location: Bruton, Somerset, UK
- Depositional Environment: Shallow marine platform with calcareous sediments, indicating well-oxygenated waters conducive to nektonic marine life
- Biozone: Associated with the Skirroceras leptogyrale Zone in regional stratigraphy
Morphological Features:
- Involute to moderately evolute shell with a narrow umbilicus
- Delicately ribbed flanks with spiral and radial ornamentation
- Fine lirae and occasional tubercles, showing excellent preservation
- Slender and compressed whorls, giving the species its name (leptogyrale = slender coiling)
Notable Scientific Importance:
- Skirroceras leptogyrale is a stratigraphically useful ammonite used to date Lower Bajocian beds, especially in southern England and parts of Europe
- This genus marks a point of morphological transition between older Stephanoceratids and later, more ornamented ammonites
