This listing showcases a RARE 9-inch fossil ammonite, Metasigaloceras rusticum, from the Turonian Stage of the Cretaceous Period, discovered in the classic Upper Chalk exposures of Dover, Kent, United Kingdom. A striking and academically important piece, this specimen comes from the distinguished Alice Purnell Collection.

Paleontological Context: Metasigaloceras rusticum is a lesser-known but distinctive member of the Acanthoceratidae Family, recognised by its broad, ribbed shell and its presence in Turonian ammonite zones. Specimens from the UK are rare and are useful for biostratigraphic zonation of chalk successions.

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
