Fossil Overview:

  • Species: Passendorferia birmensdorfensis (Geczy, 1966)
  • Type: Fossil Ammonite
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Stage: Oxfordian (~163.5 – 157.3 million years ago)
  • Location: Charente-Maritime, France
  • Specimen Size: Approx. 9 inches (22.5 cm)
  • Preservation: Natural fossil, often found in limestone or marly matrix

Geological & Depositional Environment:

The Oxfordian Stage of the Upper Jurassic was marked by warm, shallow marine conditions across much of what is now western Europe. The region of Charente-Maritime in southwestern France is renowned for its richly fossiliferous Jurassic formations, including limestones and marls laid down in low-energy, open-marine shelf environments.

These environments allowed for the exquisite preservation of ammonites, bivalves, gastropods, and echinoderms. Passendorferia birmensdorfensis is characteristic of the ammonite fauna from this time and region.

Taxonomy & Classification:

  • Phylum: Mollusca
  • Class: Cephalopoda
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Perisphinctoidea
  • Family: Perisphinctidae
  • Genus: Passendorferia
  • Species: P. birmensdorfensis (described by Geczy in 1966)

Morphological Features:

This species is distinguished by:

  • A moderately involute, evolute coiled shell
  • Prominent, bifurcating ribs crossing the whorls
  • A rounded, compressed whorl section
  • Deep umbilicus and strong ventral keel in some individuals

These features suggest it was a fast-swimming, nektonic predator in the Jurassic seas, using jet propulsion like modern cephalopods.

Notable Points:

  • Large and rare specimen at 9 inches
  • Excellent preservation of shell form and ribbing
  • From a highly fossiliferous Oxfordian deposit in France
  • Identified and described by palaeontologist Béla Géczy in 1966
  • Valuable both for display and biostratigraphic study
