Description
Available here is a rare and beautifully preserved fossil ammonite of the species Acompsoceras inconstans from the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, dated to approximately 100.5 to 93.9 million years ago. This striking specimen was collected from Cap Blanc, France, and is part of the esteemed Alice Purnell Collection, known for its curated, scientifically significant fossil specimens.
Acompsoceras inconstans belonged to the family Acanthoceratidae and is easily recognised by its large, thick, and robust shell with distinctive ribbing. These ammonites were free-swimming marine cephalopods that roamed the warm epicontinental seas of the Cretaceous, using their chambered shells for buoyancy as they pursued prey in open water.
This fossil is a chalk ammonite, having been preserved in the fine calcareous deposits typical of the region, and offers fantastic detail of the coiling and rib structure.
Geological Context: The Cenomanian Stage marks the beginning of the Late Cretaceous and was a period characterised by globally high sea levels and widespread chalk deposition. The marine limestones and chalks of Cap Blanc, France, are renowned for their abundance and preservation of marine invertebrates, particularly ammonites. Fossils from this formation are important biostratigraphic markers for global correlation.
