Description
This exceptionally rare ammonite fossil is a genuine specimen of Aegasteroceras saggitarium, a distinctive cephalopod species from the Lower Jurassic period, specifically the Obtusum Zone – Denotatus Subzone of the Frodingham Ironstone Formation. It was collected from Conesby Quarry, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, an area known for yielding important Early Jurassic marine fossils.
Aegasteroceras ammonites are recognised for their strong ribbing and prominent keel, features that reflect their hydrodynamic adaptations to life in ancient seas over 190 million years ago. These creatures were free-swimming predators related to modern squid and octopus, and their beautifully coiled shells have long fascinated paleontologists and collectors alike.
This particular fossil comes from the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, a curated selection of high-quality and historically significant British fossils. The specimen has been carefully cleaned and preserved to showcase the fine structural details of the shell.
