Description
This is a rare Baculites anceps fossil ammonite, dating to the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period (~100-94 million years ago), discovered in Gap, France. Baculites are a genus of straight-shelled ammonites, an extinct group of cephalopods related to modern squid and cuttlefish. Unlike their coiled relatives, Baculites evolved a long, uncoiled shell, which provided unique buoyancy and hydrodynamic adaptations for open marine environments.
Fossils from the Cenomanian stage represent an important evolutionary period when ammonites diversified significantly in response to changing marine ecosystems. This Baculites anceps specimen is an excellent addition to any collection, offering both scientific value and historical significance.
