Rare baculites fossil ammonite – baculites faujasi, upper maastrichtian, cretaceous, lomont, france – genuine specimen with coa

£24.00

This is a rare Baculites faujasi fossil ammonite, dating to the Upper Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous period (~70-66 million years ago), discovered in Lomont, France. Baculites were a group of straight-shelled ammonites belonging to the Baculitidae family, closely related to modern cephalopods such as squid and cuttlefish. Unlike their coiled relatives, Baculites evolved an elongated, uncoiled shell, allowing them to thrive in open marine environments of the Cretaceous seas.

This specimen represents one of the last ammonite species before the mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous, making it a significant piece of paleontological history. Baculites faujasi fossils are highly sought after due to their scientific importance and well-preserved structural details.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
