Rare baculites fossil ammonite – baculites sp., barremian, cretaceous, drôme, france – genuine specimen with coa

Original price was: £132.00.Current price is: £105.60.

This is a rare Baculites sp. fossil ammonite from the Barremian stage of the Early Cretaceous period, discovered in Drôme, France. Baculites were an extinct genus of straight-shelled ammonites, closely related to modern squid and cuttlefish. Unlike coiled ammonites, Baculites had an elongated, uncoiled shell, which allowed them to navigate open marine environments efficiently.

This specimen represents an important part of Cretaceous marine life, showing the transition from tightly coiled ammonites to more hydrodynamic, straight-shelled forms. Baculites fossils from the Early Cretaceous are rarer than their later counterparts, making this an excellent addition to any fossil collection.

Geological Information:

  • Formation: Cretaceous Marine Deposits
  • Stage: Barremian (~129-125 million years old)
  • Location: Drôme, France
  • Depositional Environment: Warm, shallow marine seafloor with fine sediment accumulation

Fossil Characteristics:

  • Elongated, straight-shelled ammonite with visible suture patterns
  • Well-preserved structure with natural mineral replacement

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
