Description
This is a rare Kossmatia tenuistriata fossil ammonite, dating back to the Upper Valanginian stage of the Early Cretaceous period (~137-133 million years ago), discovered in Italy. Kossmatia belongs to the Baculitidae family, a group of straight-shelled ammonites that adapted to open marine environments. Unlike coiled ammonites, Kossmatia evolved an elongated, uncoiled shell, which likely provided unique buoyancy adaptations for navigating the ancient seas.
Fossils from the Valanginian stage are relatively rare, representing an important period of ammonite diversification. This well-preserved specimen is highly sought after by collectors and researchers for its scientific significance and rarity.
