An impressive selection of fossils, including Ammonites, Trilobites, Belemnites, Fossil Fish, Fossil Shark Teeth, Fossilised Insects in Amber, Dinosaurs, and Reptiles. UK Fossils was formed in 1988 and collects and preps our own fossils in the heart of the Jurassic Coast, collecting fossils from Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Somerset. Our passion for fossils is reflected in our carefully curated collection, which includes some of the rarest and most unique specimens available.
A rare fossil block containing heteromorph uncoiled ammonites (Sciponoceras baculoides), from the Upper Albian Stage of the Lower Cretaceous, collected at Pénzesgyőr, Hungary. This piece is highly collectable, preserving a group of ammonites that display the distinctive uncoiled morphology characteristic of heteromorph forms. The fossil shown in the photographs is the exact one you will receive, and it is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Fossil Type & Species:
Type: Heteromorph Ammonite (extinct marine cephalopod)
Species:Sciponoceras baculoides
Order: Ammonitida
Superfamily: Turrilitoidea
Family: Baculitidae
Geological Context:
Period: Cretaceous
Epoch/Stage: Lower Cretaceous – Upper Albian (approx. 105 to 100.5 million years ago)
Biozone: Associated with the Mortoniceras inflatum Zone, an important ammonite biozone in the Albian
Formation: Albian limestone and marl deposits of Hungary
Depositional Environment: Marine carbonate shelf with fine sediments, favourable for the preservation of heteromorph ammonites
Locality:
Region: Pénzesgyőr, Hungary
Morphology & Features:
Sciponoceras baculoides exhibits a straight to gently curved, elongated shell
Distinctive uncoiled morphology with fine ribbing and ornamentation
Unusual form differing from typical coiled ammonites, making it highly desirable for collectors
Excellent preservation showcasing unique morphology and fine detail
Scientific Notes:
Sciponoceras baculoides is one of the classic heteromorph ammonites of the Albian, first described in the 19th century
Its rare uncoiled form reflects evolutionary adaptations in ammonites during the mid-Cretaceous
Scale Reference: Each square or cube = 1cm. Please see photographs for full sizing

Cretaceous Information
The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
