Description
This beautifully preserved ammonite is a rare example of Brasilia sp., an extinct cephalopod genus from the Middle Jurassic, specifically the Bajocian Stage, approximately 170 million years ago. It was discovered at the celebrated Horn Park Quarry in Dorset, United Kingdom, one of the UK’s classic fossil sites within the Inferior Oolite Formation.
Ammonites such as Brasilia were marine molluscs related to modern-day squid, cuttlefish, and octopuses. These elegant creatures thrived in ancient seas, using their coiled, chambered shells to regulate buoyancy as they moved through the water. Brasilia is known for its evolute, finely ribbed shell with intricate suture patterns, making it both scientifically valuable and aesthetically appealing.
This specimen is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, known for its scientifically curated and well-prepared fossil specimens. It has been expertly cleaned, prepped, and conserved, and is perfect for collectors, educators, or museums.
