Fossil Identification & Taxonomy

  • Phylum: Arthropoda

  • Class: Trilobita

  • Order: Asaphida

  • Genus: Ogyginus

  • Age: Ordovician Period

  • Stratigraphic Unit: Llanvirn Series

  • Locality: Upper Gilwern Quarry, Wales, United Kingdom

Trilobites were marine arthropods that thrived in Paleozoic oceans for over 250 million years. The genus Ogyginus is a classic Welsh Ordovician trilobite, frequently associated with Middle Ordovician marine sediments.

Partial specimens commonly preserve important anatomical features such as portions of the cephalon (head), thoracic segments, and pygidium (tail). Ogyginus is typically recognised by its broad cephalon, gently curved glabella, well-defined axial lobe, and segmented thorax. The exoskeleton was originally composed of calcite, which contributed to its preservation potential.

Geological Setting – Llanvirn Series, Middle Ordovician

During the Middle Ordovician, approximately 465–470 million years ago, Wales lay beneath warm, shallow epicontinental seas. Fine marine sediments accumulated on the seabed, forming mudstones and shales that later lithified into the rocks seen today at Upper Gilwern Quarry.

These depositional environments supported a diverse marine fauna, including trilobites, brachiopods, molluscs, and graptolites. Periodic burial by sediment allowed organisms such as trilobites to fossilise, preserving remarkable anatomical detail within the rock matrix.

Upper Gilwern Quarry is regarded as a classic Welsh Ordovician fossil locality, known for yielding trilobite material that contributes to understanding regional stratigraphy and marine biodiversity of the period.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
