  • Stage: Lower Callovian (approx. 166–164 million years ago)
  • Formation/Locality: Deux-Sèvres region, France
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow epicontinental marine shelf with fine-grained carbonate sediments; conditions ideal for nektonic cephalopods
  • Biozone: Possibly within the Bullatus or Coronatum ammonite zones of the Lower Callovian
  • Family: Perisphinctidae
  • Superfamily: Perisphinctoidea
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Class: Cephalopoda
  • Phylum: Mollusca
  • Described by: Quenstedt, 1887

MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES:

Bullatimorphites bullatus is characterised by its distinctive involute coiling and compressed discoidal shell. The species name “bullatus” refers to its inflated whorl section, which can be diagnostic when compared to more compressed Callovian forms. Typical features include:

  • Gently convex flanks
  • Relatively fine, evenly spaced ribbing
  • Rounded venter with no keel
  • Moderate umbilicus
  • These features make it highly recognisable and of interest for biostratigraphy and evolutionary studies.

NOTABLE ASPECTS:

  • A rare species from a classic European Jurassic site
  • Excellent preservation of fine morphological features
  • Valuable for collectors, museums, and educational use
  • Sourced from the well-regarded Alice Purnell Collection
  • Includes Certificate of Authenticity
  • Photographed specimen is the exact fossil you will receive

SUMMARY:

  • Species: Bullatimorphites bullatus

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
