RARE Calycoceras asiaticum Fossil Chalk Ammonite with Belemnite – Middle Cenomanian, Cretaceous – France – Alice Purnell Collection

£32.40

This listing offers a rare and scientifically significant fossil combination featuring a well-preserved Calycoceras asiaticum ammonite with an attached belemnite, from the Middle Cenomanian Stage of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 98 to 95 million years ago. This exceptional specimen was collected from the fossil-rich chalk deposits of Normandy, France, and is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, known for its museum-quality and thoroughly documented fossils.

Calycoceras asiaticum is a member of the Acanthoceratidae family and is characterised by strong ribbing, prominent tubercles, and an ornate, evolute shell. This species is a biostratigraphic marker for the Cenomanian and is highly sought after by both scientists and collectors.

Adding to its rarity, this fossil also includes an attached belemnite—an extinct group of marine cephalopods related to modern squid. Belemnites possessed internal bullet-shaped shells and were important mid-level predators in ancient marine ecosystems.

Geological Context: The Middle Cenomanian Stage is part of the early Late Cretaceous, a period marked by warm global climates and extensive marine transgressions. The chalk beds of Normandy are globally recognised for yielding exceptionally preserved ammonites, belemnites, and other marine invertebrates. These calcareous deposits formed in shallow seas and now serve as a key resource for understanding Cretaceous marine environments.
