RARE Caumatosphinctes bifurcus Fossil Ammonite – Upper Bajocian, Jurassic – Caen, France – Alice Purnell Collection

£24.00

This listing offers a rare and scientifically significant Caumatosphinctes bifurcus fossil ammonite from the Upper Bajocian Stage of the Middle Jurassic Period, dating back approximately 170 million years. This exceptional specimen was discovered in Caen, Normandy, France, and is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection.

Caumatosphinctes is a genus of extinct ammonites belonging to the family Perisphinctidae. These marine molluscs are characterised by their finely ribbed, involute shells and distinctively bifurcating rib structures, which offer palaeontologists key insights into Middle Jurassic ammonite evolution and zonation. Caumatosphinctes bifurcus, in particular, is known for its bifurcating ribs that split neatly into secondary ribs across the shell’s flanks, producing a striking ornamental appearance.

The ammonite inhabited shallow epicontinental seas that covered much of Europe during the Jurassic period. The sedimentary deposits of the Caen Basin are highly fossiliferous and have yielded important marine fauna including ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, and brachiopods. Fossils from this locality are highly sought after for both their scientific relevance and display value.

This fossil ammonite has been naturally preserved, showcasing excellent detail of its ribbing and curvature. A premium addition to any fossil collection, educational exhibit, or interior decor inspired by natural history.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
