Description
This is a rare and well-preserved fossil of Cenoceras lineatus, a Jurassic nautiloid from the Inferior Oolite Formation, Middle Jurassic (~170 million years ago), discovered in Burton Bradstock, Dorset, United Kingdom.
Cenoceras is an extinct genus of nautiloids that thrived in the Jurassic seas. Unlike ammonites, nautiloids had a simpler internal chamber structure, enabling efficient buoyancy control and navigation. Cenoceras lineatus is known for its coiled shell, smooth sutures, and faint growth lines, making it an intriguing addition to any fossil collection.
This specimen originates from the Inferior Oolite, a Middle Jurassic limestone formation known for its abundant marine fossils, including ammonites, bivalves, and gastropods. The Burton Bradstock area on the Jurassic Coast is a renowned fossil locality, yielding exceptionally well-preserved marine fossils.
