Description
This is a rare and well-preserved fossil of Cenoceras lineatus, a species of extinct nautiloid cephalopod from the Inferior Oolite Formation, Bajocian stage of the Middle Jurassic (~170 million years ago), found in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom.
Cenoceras is a genus of nautiloids that thrived in Jurassic seas, possessing a smooth, coiled shell with faint growth lines and a streamlined form. Unlike ammonites, nautiloids had simpler internal chamber structures and lacked complex ribbing, making them efficient swimmers and skilled hunters.
This specimen originates from the Inferior Oolite Formation, a significant marine deposit from the Bajocian period. This formation is known for its rich diversity of cephalopods, including ammonites and nautiloids, making this fossil a valuable addition to any collection.
