Description
This is a rare and well-preserved fossil of Cenoceras polygonum, a species of extinct nautiloid cephalopod from the Bajocian stage of the Middle Jurassic (~170 million years ago), discovered in Belgium.
Cenoceras is a genus of Jurassic nautiloids known for its smooth, coiled shell with visible growth lines and simple internal chamber structures. Unlike ammonites, nautiloids had simpler sutures and were active swimmers, capable of controlling their buoyancy efficiently.
This specimen originates from Jurassic marine deposits in Belgium, a region rich in fossil cephalopods. The excellent preservation of the shell structure makes this a significant piece for collectors and researchers alike.
