Description
This is a rare and beautifully preserved Cenoceras sp. fossil nautilus from the Bajocian Stage of the Middle Jurassic (~170 million years ago). It was discovered in Caen, France, a well-known fossil locality renowned for its Jurassic marine deposits.
Cenoceras is an extinct genus of nautiloid cephalopods that thrived in warm Jurassic seas. Unlike ammonites, which have intricate suture patterns, nautiloids like Cenoceras possess a simpler, more primitive shell structure. These marine predators used their buoyant, chambered shells to navigate the ancient oceans, feeding on small fish and invertebrates.
The Bajocian Stage is an important period in Jurassic paleontology, marking the diversification of marine cephalopods. The fossil-rich deposits of Caen, France, are known for their well-preserved specimens of ammonites, nautiloids, and marine reptiles, making this fossil a significant piece of natural history.
